JIAB exists to publish high quality research papers in accounting, corporate finance, corporate governance and their interfaces. The interfaces are relevant in many areas such as financial reporting and communication, valuation, financial performance measurement and managerial reward and control structures. A feature of JIAB is that it recognises that informational problems are pervasive in financial markets and business organisations, and that accounting plays an important role in resolving such problems.

Abstract

This study examines the effects of individual risk attitudes, professional experiences, and organizational cultures on auditor conservatism in Indonesia. On the basis of a factorial survey involving 153 auditors in three major cities in Indonesia (Jakarta, Surabaya, and Denpasar), this study finds strong evidence that, compared with others, auditors with a lower tendency to take risks and those who have less professional experience tend to be more conservative when performing audit tasks. Nonetheless, this study does not find evidence of the influence of organizational culture on auditor conservatism. Overall, the findings of this study could be of interest to professional associations, regulatory bodies, and other policymakers in Indonesia and other countries as they attempt to constrain aggressive reporting through high-quality independent audits by public accountants in their jurisdictions. Keywords: Auditor conservatism, risk attitude, experience, organisational culture, auditing standards

Abstract

This paper provides a descriptive analysis of management control system (MCS) in BRIA journal from 2006 to 2018. A total of 180 articles were examined, resulting in the identification of 34 articles for further analysis. The analysis led to several findings. 1) Most of the articles use quantitative methods, examine MCS at the managerial level, and emphasize one- or two-dimensional control systems. 2) The dominant topics are strategic performance measurement system, budget, reward compensation system, and performance achievement. 3) The dominant independent variables are incentives, psychological, strategy performance measurement systems, and environmental dynamism. 4) The dominant dependent variables are performance and psychological variables. 5) Environmental dynamism and environmental uncertainty are the external contingencies that affect performance, and the most dominant internal contingency is the variable related to individual factors. 6) Finally, the majority of the article use contingency variables that tend to concentrate on increasing the number of independent rather than dependent variables. Abstract

This study aims to investigate the role of forward contract hedging in maintaining volatility cash flow and growth opportunity and its impact on investor reaction. The population in this study included 242 non-financial companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange from 2013–2017. The sample was determined using purposive sampling, and path analysis was employed to analyze the data. Results show that forward contract hedging mediates the effects of volatility cash flow and growth opportunity on investor reaction. This research is expected to provide insights so that company management can improve performance properly and increase investor confidence through the application of hedging, thereby maintaining volatility cash flow and growth opportunity. Keywords: Cash flow volatility, growth opportunity, hedging forward contract, investor reaction.

Abstract

Using a sample of Indonesian agricultural and mining companies, this study aims to provide empirical evidence to prove the effects of auditor type, the board size, and audit committee on intellectual capital disclosure (ICD). The sample consisted of 18 agricultural and 28 mining companies, which were chosen using the content analysis method. The five-year observation period lasted from 2013 to 2017, resulting in 230 units of analysis. Data analysis employed a panel regression model with panel data testing. The study finds a positive impact of auditor type and audit committee on ICD as well as a negative influence of board size on ICD. The results conform to existing stakeholder and legitimacy theories. Keywords: Intellectual capital disclosure; auditor type; board size; audit committee

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effects of tax knowledge, tax sanctions, and tax socialization on taxpayer compliance, as mediated and moderated by taxpayer awareness level of taxpayer education, respectively. The research sample included 196 taxpayers registered in the Primary South Semarang Tax Office. They were selected using the convenience sampling method. The data analysis employed structural equation modeling with warp partial least square. Results show that tax knowledge, tax sanctions, and tax socialization all have a significant positive effect on taxpayer awareness and taxpayer compliance. Meanwhile, the level of education does not moderate tax knowledge on taxpayer compliance. The taxpayers’ awareness mediates the relationship between tax compliance, on the one hand, and tax knowledge, tax socialization, and tax sanctions on the other hand. Thus, the Directorate General of Taxes must increase the intensity of guidance provided to taxpayers to encourage better compliance and reduce tax avoidance behaviors. Keywords: Tax knowledge; tax sanctions; tax dissemination; taxpayer awareness; taxpayer compliance.

Abstract

Dealing with the practice of tax avoidance in general, many countries have compiled and implemented their own general anti-avoidance rules (GAAR). This research aims to explore the potential of statutory GAAR in handling tax avoidance practices in Indonesia and SAAR formulas that are suitable for the Indonesian context. This qualitative research employed a case study approach. Results show that the application of SAAR and the principle of substance over form in Indonesia cannot yet be applied properly; thus GAAR is needed. It is expected that the implementation of statutory GAAR can accommodate the limitations of regulators in light of unknown and future tax avoidance schemes.. Keywords: Tax-avoidance, tax planning, specific anti avoidance rule (SAAR), international tax

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate how risk information disclosed in prospectus influences the initial returns of initial public offerings (IPOs) in Indonesia. This study collected 62 sample IPOs offered in the Indonesian Stock Exchange from 2017–2018. Ordinary least squares was performed to test the association between risk disclosure and initial returns. Results indicate that prospectus provides risk information associated with initial returns. Both qualitative and quantitative dimensions have a significant negative impact on the initial returns. It can be concluded that risk information has an important role in the underpricing phenomenon. The study has extended the available literature by investigating risk disclosure from a dual perspective. Moreover, qualitative and quantitative assessments both have a direct impact on the initial returns and must be considered in investment decision making. Keywords: Risk, IPO, underpricing, initial returns

Abstract

This study aims to examine observations and determine the effects of corporate governance on the efficiency of the Indonesian banking sector. The research calculated DEA efficiency and performed logistic regression, with a total sample of 150 observations. Results show that independent commissioners, the educational level of commissioners, the board of commissioners meeting, and the term of office of the commissioners all have a significant impact on improving the efficiency of the banking industry. Conversely, the large number of commissioners as well as the gender differences among them do not have any effect on banking efficiency. These findings indicate that authorities should not focus on the size of the board and the gender differences among the board commissioners in finding ways to increase or decrease a firm’s efficiency. The results of this study can contribute to academic research through agency theory and resource dependence theory as well as provide insights that can be used by practitioners. Abstract

Auditor performance is the result of work rendered in carrying out one’s duties within a certain period of time. The quality of auditing is improved if the auditor shows good performance. The aim of this research is to determine how intellectual/emotional/spiritual intelligence, independence, and the culture of Tri Hita Karana affect auditor performance in public accounting firms in Bali. This research was conducted in seven public accountant firms in Bali and questionnaires were used to collect the data. Purposive sampling was employed to determine the sample, and multiple linear regression was applied as a technique of analysis. This research contributes to the literature as it considers Tri Hita Karana as a factor that affects auditor performance. Hopefully, this research can give guidance to public accounting firms in terms of how intellectual/emotional/spiritual intelligence, independence, and Tri Hita Karana influence auditor performance. Keywords: Tri Hita Karana, auditor, intelligence, independence
